GEO vs SEO: do you still need SEO?
Yes, you still need SEO. GEO (generative engine optimization) builds on it: Google says the same SEO best practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, and a page Google can't index can't be cited in them. GEO adds work on AI crawlers, answer-ready pages and how AI tools describe you.
What's the difference between GEO and SEO?
SEO helps your pages rank in search results. GEO helps AI tools name your business and cite your pages when they write an answer.
| At a glance | SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Pages ranked and clicked in search results | Your business named and cited in AI answers |
| Where you show up | Search results lists | Answers in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews |
| What gets measured | Indexing, rankings, clicks | Mentions and citations in answers |
| What you control | Your site, content and links | The same, plus which AI crawlers you allow |
| How stable | Rankings shift over time | Answers can change from one run to the next |

Do I still need SEO if I'm doing GEO?
Yes. For Google's AI features, SEO is the foundation, not an optional extra.
Google says the best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that there are no additional requirements or special optimizations needed to appear in them. To be eligible as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet (Google Search Central, checked 18 October 2026).
So if your pages have crawl or indexing problems, fixing those comes before anything labeled GEO. Anyone who tells you SEO no longer matters is skipping the step Google itself says comes first.
Where do GEO and SEO overlap?
Almost everywhere on your own site. The fundamentals Google lists for its AI features are classic SEO work:
- Allowing crawling in robots.txt and by your hosting or CDN
- Internal links so pages can be found
- A good page experience
- Important content in text form
- Structured data that matches the visible text
- An up-to-date Google Business Profile
All from Google Search Central, checked 18 October 2026. Google's guidance on helpful, people-first content applies to both (Google Search Central, checked 18 October 2026).
Where is GEO different?
Outside Google, and in how results are measured.
- Other AI tools run their own crawlers. OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers, and that its training crawler, GPTBot, is a separate setting (OpenAI, checked 18 October 2026). Perplexity uses PerplexityBot for its search results (Perplexity, checked 18 October 2026). A robots.txt file written only with Googlebot in mind can block these by accident.
- Answers are generated, not listed. Google notes AI Overviews often don't trigger, and that AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models, so responses and links vary (Google Search Central, checked 18 October 2026).
- Mentions count, not just clicks. A tool can name your business without linking to you. GEO tracks mentions and citations separately.
- Writing style matters a little differently. Research that coined the term GEO found that citing sources, quotations and statistics made content more visible in AI answers, while keyword stuffing didn't help (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024, checked 18 October 2026).
Which should a small business do first?
The shared foundations, because they help with both. In order:
- Make sure search engines and AI search crawlers can reach your key pages.
- Fix indexing and technical blockers.
- Put your services, the areas you serve and your key facts in plain text, with question headings and direct answers.
- Add structured data that matches the page.
- Keep your Google Business Profile and other listings consistent with your site.
If you're a real estate agency, our real estate page shows how this applies to agent and suburb pages.
How does RankX handle both?
One audit covers both. The AI Visibility Audit checks technical SEO and AI readiness across nine published areas, plus a small Google AI Overviews check on your agreed keywords.
- Evidence under every finding, and "Not assessed" where a check didn't run
- A prioritized fix list and a walkthrough call
- In a Sprint, we make the fixes ourselves, then re-audit to verify them. Nothing is published without your sign-off.
- We work alongside your SEO or web agency and share the findings and fix list with them
